Five days on Italy's Amalfi Coast in Positano, Amalfi and Ravello. Italy is one of the most dog-friendly countries in Europe, and dogs are welcome on many restaurant terraces, ferries and trains. The coast is famous for its steep stairs, so every walk is fitted to your pets' size, age and energy.
Where you stay
A pet-friendly hotel in Positano, picked for easy access from the road
Getting there
Fly into Rome or Naples (small pets fly in the cabin on many airlines), then a pet-friendly private transfer to the coast
Best time to go
May to June and September to October
Best for
Relaxed dogs who enjoy terraces and slow lunches. Small dogs handle the stairs best
Your trip, day by day
A sample plan. Yours is fitted to every pet in your group: size, breed, age and energy.
Day 1
Arrive in Positano
Morning
Fly into Naples or Rome.
Afternoon
Take a private pet-friendly transfer along the coast road, about 90 minutes from Naples, and check in.
Evening
Stroll down to the beach at sunset, then have dinner on a terrace above the sea.
Pet tip: Positano is built on stairs. Small or older dogs may need carrying, so we choose a hotel close to the road.
Day 2
Path of the Gods
Morning
Hike the Path of the Gods high above the coast, about three hours, starting early while it is cool. Small or older dogs get an easier walk through town instead.
Afternoon
Rest through the afternoon heat.
Evening
Pizza or pasta on a terrace with a view.
Pet tip: There is little shade on the trail. Carry water for every dog.
Day 3
Amalfi by ferry
Morning
Take the ferry along the coast to Amalfi, with the ferry's pet rules checked for you.
Afternoon
Visit the cathedral square, walk the lemon groves and have a long lunch in the shade.
Evening
Ferry back to Positano for a quiet evening.
Pet tip: Italian ferries and trains usually ask for a leash, and some ask you to carry a muzzle.
Day 4
Ravello
Morning
Head up to Ravello, the quietest of the three towns.
Afternoon
Walk the calm streets and the garden terraces high above the sea (we confirm which gardens allow dogs), then a slow lunch.
Evening
Watch the sunset over the coast before heading back.
Pet tip: Ravello is cooler and calmer, a good break for pets who find Positano busy.
Day 5
Slow morning and home
Morning
A last walk and an espresso with a view.
Afternoon
Transfer back to the airport.
Evening
Home, with a sun-kissed pet and a new stamp.
Pet tip: Keep the EU health paperwork in your carry-on for the flight home.
Add a day in Capri or Sorrento +$39
Stay one more night. Capri suits small dogs who handle crowds, with a ferry over and quiet walks in Anacapri. Sorrento is flatter and easier for big dogs, with wide streets and terrace dinners over the bay.
