Creek swims, shaded trails, a treehouse cabin that takes big dogs, and patio dinners in small Hill Country towns. It is our easiest trip and a great first one for a dog who loves the water.
Where you stay
A treehouse cabin with a deck near the river, picked for big dogs and groups
Getting there
A 1 to 2 hour drive from Austin or San Antonio, with a shaded rest stop planned
Best time to go
April to June and September to November. In summer, swims and hikes move to early morning
Best for
Swimmers, big dogs and families with more than one dog
Your trip, day by day
A sample plan. Yours is fitted to every pet in your group: size, breed, age and energy.
Day 1
Drive in and check in
Morning
Drive in with a planned stop at a shaded park halfway.
Afternoon
Check in to your treehouse cabin. Pet fees and the number of dogs allowed are already confirmed for your group.
Evening
Grill on the deck and watch the sun go down over the hills.
Pet tip: Check the deck rails and stairs before you let your dog roam.
Day 2
Swim and hike
Morning
Swim at a river spot where dogs are allowed, before the crowds arrive.
Afternoon
Pack a lunch, then nap in the cabin through the hottest hours. Late in the afternoon, take a shaded hike in a state park that allows leashed dogs.
Evening
Dinner on a dog-friendly patio on Main Street in Fredericksburg.
Pet tip: Rinse your dog with fresh water after swimming and check for ticks and burrs.
Day 3
Tacos and home
Morning
Breakfast tacos, a short walk, and a peach stand stop when peaches are in season.
Afternoon
Drive home with a planned rest stop.
Evening
Home, with a tired, happy dog.
Pet tip: Never leave your dog in the car, even for a quick stop. Texas cars heat up in minutes.
Checked for your pets
Water levels and algae notices before every swim
